Fancy a climb to the first place the sun’s rays touch mainland Australia each morning? Just an hour south of the Gold Coast in NWS Northern Rivers is Mt Warning, Australia’s Green Cauldron. It is the central volcanic remnant of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest shield volcano that erupted 23 million years ago. This World Heritage National Park now covered in subtropical and temperate rainforests it is a picturesque place to come and visit, with a 360 degree view from the top where you can see from the Gold Coast to Byron Bay.
The Mt Warning climb is an 8.8km return walk that will take approximately five hours. So get up early if you want to reach the peak and be the first in Australia to see the sun rise. Toilets are on available at the start of the walk and you should wear suitable footwear and pack your own water and refreshments. If you are not up to such a big walk, or are taking littlies, the Lyrebird Track is shorter walk that will lead you to the Korrumbyn Creek Picnic Area.
Mt Warning Climbers Certificates are available at reception, and camp sites are available if you really feel like getting closer to nature. Mavis’s Kitchen and Cabins is located at the foot of the mountain and offers accommodation and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner serving up organic, fresh home-style meals – a great way to wind down before you head back to the coast.
