Well known for its great surf, it has finally been recognized by the World Surfing Reserve program. It was announced in the UK at the four day Global Wave Conference. It comes after almost two years of dedicated campaigning the Gold Coast has been listed as the World’s 8th Surfing Reserve. It was a tough competition with Guarda do Embáo, Brazil and Noosa, Australia also vying for the title.
The Gold Coast joins other prestigious beaches including Malibu, California; Ericeira, Portugal; Manly Beach, Australia; Santa Cruz, California; Huanchaco, Peru; Bahia Todos Santos, Baja California, Mexico and Punta de Lobos, Chile.
The Gold Coast stretch of beach that has been recognized is approximately 15km long, from Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks. This includes the central beach breaks in between such as Palm Beach, Currumbin, Tugun, Bilinga and North Kirra.
Save the Waves runs the World Surfing Reserve Program. Their aim is to proactively identify, preserve and protect outstanding waves, surf zones and the surrounding environments around the world. This also helps to protect the cultural, economic and community attributes. This is great news for the beautiful Gold Coast.
